Diaper Rash Cream: The Big Guns

Hello all! A whole lot of life has been happening over here. Jeremiah's dear old grandfather passed away, my grandmother is in the ICU, our dear friend Mary is bravely fighting cancer, and in the midst of it all sweet Moses has had a stomach bug for the past 5 days. Five. Oh man. You may remember, this happened last year, too. We did not go in for IV's this time, thank heavens. I thought I would share our go-to diaper rash cream when things are really bad. You can get a prescription for it, but you can get the ingredients over the counter for the same cost as a $10 copay. All you need is some Ichthammol Ointment and Maximum Strength Desitin.

You can get the Ichthammol from you local pharmacy. It is kept behind the counter, but does not require a prescription.
(Why does blogger do this?)
And a tube of the good ol' standby.
You just put the Desitin in a small dish (that has a lid!) and heat it up for a few seconds, and then add the Ichthammol - which is pretty stinky stuff. We call it engine grease! Make sure the container you mix it in has a lid for storage! We just put it on the rash with a Q-Tip.

Here's to happy hiney's!

More Hayes Happenings

Life around here has been interesting.. and kinda yucky. Last Saturday (the 9th) Moses came down with the stomach flu. This is what he did for the next 7 days:

The blanket was down to cover the area rug. There were blankets everywhere. I found it is much easier to clean up a blanket than the floor! We had a trip to Albuquerque planned for Monday the 11th. My sweet friend Bonnie had taken 3 days off of work and I didn't want that to be for nothing.. and I couldn't pass up a trip home with help so we headed off. Well, Monday Moses and I both got really sick and Jeremiah, who we had left in Farmington, came down with it, too. Bless Bonnie's heart. What a wonderful friend! Not only did she help when I needed it in the middle of the night, but bright and early on Tuesday she drove us home... only to come down with the funk the next day. Oh Bonnie, I'm so sorry.. and you're the best!
As soon as we got home we headed up to Durango (with my mother-in-law in tow - we needed another healthy person to contaminate) because the pediatrician wanted to see Moses. Now that was fun. Two parents with the stomach flu and a sick baby. I do not care to repeat that experience! The pediatrician sent us home with some ideas to help sweet Moshe. Unfortunately, nothing worked and we ended up back at the doc's two days later and were sent to the ER for IV fluids. Which looked something like this:
I am grateful for some numbing cream that made it easier on Moses, but the whole experience was pretty awful. Another thing on the "do not repeat" list. Moses spent the rest of the day like this:

(Please excuse my pregnant body.. and cankles..)
This was totally weird for my little guy. He is not, at all, a cuddle bug. Over the course of the last week, however, all he wanted to do was lay on his mama. Poor little fellow.
I am glad to say that the IV fluids and anti-nausea meds really helped and we are now getting back to normal. Thank you Lord for normal!

Sick little Moses.

Yuck. Ick. Eww.
So far there are very few things in motherhood worse than a sick baby. The crying, lack of sleep, no eating, oh, and did I mention projectile poo as I try to get a rectal temperature? (Sorry about that.) This was one of those things I was going to just ride out. Sure, he was fussy, seemed warm and I had changed a dozen diapers... but in the scheme of things Moses seemed okay. I called the pediatrician, however, when friend urged me to do so, and they asked me to bring him in right away because a rectal temperature of 102 meant it was really 103 and that was just too high. **Disclaimer: Moses' health is of prime importance!** As the nurse was telling me to come in, my mind immediately went to the fact that I was right in the middle of kneading bread, Moses had woke up early from a nap and was fussing in his crib and I had just got out of the shower about 15 minutes prior. Oh, and did I mention we had company coming for dinner and the pediatrician is an HOUR away? I did what any mom would do. I said I could be there in about 1 hour 45 minutes. I finished the bread and took it along so it could rise in the car and be punched when needed, set Moses in front of a video with a bottle and quickly tried to get ready. We made it with about 5 minutes to spare. Moses has a tummy bug, nothing more. No ear aches. No teething. All he needs is pedialyte, Tylenol and love. We made it home in time to get things ready before our guests arrived, dad had started dinner and Mo was feeling much better after some Tylenol and a bit of pedialyte. Okay, and a lot of PUPD (thank you Baby Whisperer!!). Poor little guy! Here's hoping we can all get some much needed rest and that Moses will wake up 100% in the morning!

Still sicky's..

This is our week.. anything to keep Moses happy.

Chewing on his bib makes him very happy..

He hasn't had much of an appetite.. so playing with his bottle and eating his fingers makes him very happy..

Mama made Moses a little bed in the living room to watch Baby Einstein. And took the paci outside of the crib. And gave him a bear to snuggle with.
Sigh, life is good.
  • Humidifier.. check!
  • Baby Vick's.. check!
  • Saline drops.. check!
  • Snuggles.. check!
  • Plenty of love.. check!

Sick little Mo-Man.

If only Mama kisses could make it "all better". With all the sneezing and throwing up around here, I've really had to amp up the amount of kisses Mo gets, just to keep it even. Get better soon, little buddy!
